Our History

The Millersville Technology & Engineering Camp Series began in 1993 with a bold idea: create a hands-on, academically focused summer camp for students who were curious about how things work. At a time when most campus summer programs focused on athletics, Professor Len S. Litowitz of Millersville University’s Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology and MU alumnus John R. Brown saw an opportunity to build something different. Their goal was simple: give students an affordable, engaging way to explore engineering and technology through real projects.

That first summer, four sections of LEGO Logo were offered through the University’s Continuing Education program. LEGO Logo, one of the earliest computer-controlled LEGO systems, allowed students to combine programming with physical design long before robotics became mainstream in schools. Demand quickly grew. Within two years, the program expanded and transitioned directly into the academic department. New camp topics were added, enrollment increased, and the foundation for a long-standing summer tradition was established.

Growing With Technology

Over the past three decades, the camp series has evolved alongside the technologies shaping our world. As new tools and fields emerged, so did new camp offerings. Topics have included:

Today, approximately 20 half-day, week-long camps are offered each summer, serving students across a wide range of age groups and experience levels. Select one-day specialty experiences have also been added for older students seeking deeper exploration. Each camp is built around applied learning. Students don’t just observe technology. They build, test, design, program, and solve real challenges.

A Legacy of Impact

For more than 30 years, the camp has introduced thousands of students to engineering and technology pathways. Many former campers have gone on to pursue degrees and careers in:

The program also provides early exposure to Millersville University’s Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology facilities and faculty, giving students a glimpse of collegiate-level learning in an accessible and welcoming environment.

Leadership and Vision

Len Litowitz served on the Millersville faculty for 39 years and co-founded the camp series in 1993. Throughout his tenure, he championed hands-on, project-based learning rooted in real-world application. As the program continues to grow, it remains grounded in the same mission that launched it more than three decades ago:

Looking to the future, the program will continue to expand its connection to regional industry and workforce pathways. By strengthening ties between education and real-world careers, the program ensures students see how the skills they build today connect to tomorrow’s opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Summer Camps

Find answers to your questions or contact us for more info!

What age groups are the camps for?

Our camps cater to Grade 3 and up. Camp age ranges vary widely by topic. Read camp descriptions for more detail.

Who are the camp instructors?

Some are university professors, some are public school teachers, and some are education majors. All have public school teacher clearances.

Why does the tuition for the camps vary?

Some camps utilize consumable materials. Others have a take-home component such as a robot or product.

Is there lunch supervision?

Yes. As a convenience to parents of campers who are taking a morning and afternoon camp you can register your kids for supervised lunch hour. We will watch the children in our lounge area and ensure that they make it to the afternoon camp. We do not provide food, but we offer the use of a refrigerator, toaster oven and microwave for packed lunches.

Do you offer break time?

Most camps take about a 10 or 15 minute break at the mid-point for snacks. During break we typically serve some snacks and soda. Those with allergies to specific foods like peanuts or peanut oil are encouraged to bring an alternative snack. We often have some fruit chews as an alternative as well.
